Of course, of course, India has so much more, you say. In fact, if you quiz our colleagues down the hall at Outlook Traveller Getaways, they’ll tell you that there are 1000 Places to See in India. So, no, our cover list of 100 Must-do Indian destinations and experiences is neither definitive nor fair; much less is it comprehensive. So if you come to these pages thinking you’ll run into all the usual suspects, think again. There’s no Taj in the Heritage category. No Corbett in Nature. No whitewater rafting in Rishikesh cutting a swathe through the Adventure category. No Delhi in Cities. We’re not serving any butter chicken in our food section either. This is not to say that the great attractions aren’t great. You bet they are. But the only way we can retain the allure of travel is by going to new places, doing new things, experiencing the unknown. I don’t expect you to agree with our list. When you dip into it, there will be moments of recognition, of course, and these will differ from reader to reader. But I fervently hope there will be many more moments of surprise. Please do send in your own take on must-do destinations. I’d really like to know. Elsewhere in the issue, it’s raining monsoon destinations (no, Mumbai’s not one of them). Down south, the Kakadu National Park in Northern Australia gives up its primordial secrets. And I’m happy to report, with some measure of pride, that we’ve finally made it to Baltistan and the storied Karakoram range. These are some of the most sublime and mysterious mountains in the world. They’re lofty too, and bring us that bit closer to a traveller’s heaven—and I’m certain there is one.
