The Cost of democracy: The Government spent a whooping Rs 3426 crore on the 2014 Lok Sabha elections making it the most expensive elections in the history of the country. The cost of the 2014 election showed a substantial jump of 131 per cent over the expenditure incurred in holding the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. The 2009 Lok Sabha elections cost Rs 1438 to the exchequer.
