In order to test the potential of the biopsychosocial model of health,
community based sample of 343 subjects was reached out and tested on a
variety of biological, psychological and social variables backed by macro
variables, like, age, sex, education and area of residence. The sample consists
of balanced and varied chronically sickgroup n163 as well those who
reported themselves in good health n180. Significance of difference
between chronically sick group and healthy group revealed that healthy
sample was better on life satisfaction, happiness, general health, and
cognitive functioning memory and reaction time whereas, sick group was
found to have higher psychological distress, somatic complaints, blood
sugar, external health hardiness, religiosity, anger, stress etc. The correlation
between age and health related variables exhibited a general declining trend
whereas, educational level was positively related to health related variables.
Sex differences were also revealed on several parameters, e.g., males had
high blood pressure, haemoglobin level, skin temperature, quick decision
and motor time, better self reported health, low somatic and psychological
complaints, low pulse rate than females. While testing the differences
between urban and rural sample it was found that urban subjects were
better on health related variables, than the rural samples. BMI and BP were
high in urban sample but they were low on blood sugar, somatic complaints,
and psychological distress and had quick reaction times, good memory and
high on self reported health than rural sample. To explore the generality of
the biopsychosocial model factor analysis was also done, which did not
attest to the holistic model. The most major principal component was loaded by variables like self-reported health, happiness, life satisfaction on the
one pole and psychological distress and somatic complaints, external health
hardiness etc. on the other pole. A factor on high religiosity, low optimism,
high belief in God and high external control of health was also obtained.
Another important factor with life satisfaction, happiness and self health
hardiness also emerged. Biological and cognitive parameters did not load
on the axis but were represented by narrow band factors.
