The present paper aims at understanding co-morbidity of mental and medical
disorders which is a central task in assessing and treating psychological
problems in older adults ranging from anxiety disorders, acute state of
confusion, mood disorder, sleep disorders to somatoform disorders.
Knowledge of the unique problems of late life and of the needed adaptation
of psychological interventions for older adults will maximise the effectiveness
of those still working in various organisations and we Psychologists need
to address these issues and focus on solutions.
The range of care provision includes medical specialisation like geriatrics,
psycho-geriatrics refers to old-age psychiatry, local and state health
services, general practice, community hospitals, voluntary societies, private
care, etc.
Training is given on reality orientation for confused patients; validation
therapy; psychotherapy or counseling; life review; improving intellectual
functioning; coping with anxiety and depression; reducing somatic
preoccupation; rehabilitation; behavioural deficit and excesses. Consultation
and teamwork is required. The greatest need is to master specialised
assessment and treatment approaches. Along with the older adult’s need
for individual attention, families and care givers often need help in
understanding and coping with the cognitive factors and behavioural
problems that accompany it.
