Sport is no longer a means of sheer recreation; it is an inevitable hallmark of a republic that determines the multifaceted policies of the brand new corporate world order. Traditionally, the coaching of athletes has largely emphasised on the development of technical ability and physical fitness and neglected the critical psychological factors. Even though, the stance one takes on the exact relationship between intelligence and mental health could drastically influence the psychological training of a sports persons, and the like; the issue seems to be unanswered. The present study is an attempt to append impetus in that direction. The sample consisted of 304 sports persons 161 male and 143 female from South India. The tools employed were Advanced Progressive Matrices J.C. Raven, 1988 and Mental Health Status Scale Gireesan and Samsanandaraj, 2004. The results of the study show a positive trend of the correlations among different dimensions of mental health and intelligence, which indicate that the two variables—mental health and intelligence—are not opposing forces. Nevertheless, the correlation between mental health and intelligence is found to be statistically non-insignificant. Male sportspersons have scored significantly high on measures of mental health and intelligence than their female counterparts.
