Breast cancer is a major public health problem affecting a large segment
of women in India. The aim of the study was to examine the role of
psychological factors, namely, mental adjustment, depression and quality
of life in patients diagnosed with breast cancer. Sixty patients with breast
cancer in two age groups, namely, 30-45 years and 46-60 years were
recruited for the present study. They were assessed by the following tools:
Mental Adjustment to Cancer MAC scale, Beck Depression Inventory-II
and Quality of Life Scale Cancer. Results were discussed using
percentages and t-test. Patients in the younger age group 30-45 years
are found to be depressed, having significant reductions in their quality
of life and they are adopting a negative coping style of helplessness
hopelessness.
