He entered into politics to serve the common men and soon became popular due to his honesty and dedication. He also tried his best to eradicate the problems of peasants. Becoming the President of Indian National Congress, he played a leading role in country's Struggle for Independence and was arrested very often. After independence, he became the first Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of India and guided its integration into a united, independent nation.
