About this issue

Women empowerment is a critical issue, which has drawn the attention of critics and civil societies in recent years. Bangladesh, like many other South-Asian countries is mostly a male dominant country where women are always less privileged. Though almost half of the population of the nation is female, most of them are not involved in income generating activities (IGAs) and hence they have to depend on the earnings of the principal male earners of their families. Ultimately, they lack freedom and choice in decision-making in their socio-economic life. Yet, urban women are gradually becoming more involved in income generating activities (IGAs) than the village women and are enjoying a little more freedom in decision-making. The urban working women are not only spending their income for themselves, they are also contributing a major portion of their income for their families. In fact, the percentage of income contribution of the women to their families compared to their income is huge. However, even after such big contribution, the women are given less priority in the decision-making in their families. The data and information that are used throughout this paper are extracted from Bangladesh. The write-up will focus on analyzing the relationship between income generation by urban women and the empowerment of the same in the socio-economic perspective.
