About this issue

Highlights of Business Today - 11th October 2026 issue:

Business Today Magazine’s latest cover story turns the spotlight on India’s business schools at a time when the traditional MBA is being rethought. With applications declining, costs rising and employers changing what they expect from management graduates, the degree must show how it can prepare students for a fast-changing business environment. The Business Today–MDRA Best B-Schools 2026-27 edition evaluates 277 participating management institutes across India.

The shift is already visible globally, where several universities have discontinued full-time MBA programmes. In India, schools are promoting one-year executive courses and rethinking how they teach as AI reshapes work and Gen Z weighs alternatives such as specialised master’s degrees, micro-credentials and start-ups.

The stakes are high for students choosing where to study and how much to invest. Forty per cent of India’s top 25 B-schools reported lower admissions this year than last, including four IIMs. Placement trends also point to changing employer demand, with hiring at the top 25 schools declining while the placement rate rose among schools ranked 51–75. The new rankings place IIM Ahmedabad first, followed by IIM Calcutta, IIM Lucknow, SPJIMR and XLRI.

Collectively, the latest issue captures management education at a turning point: as technology, student expectations and hiring needs evolve, business schools face pressure to make the MBA more relevant, flexible and valuable. In a conversation with Business Today, ISB Dean Madan M. Pillutla discusses how learning could become more personalised and spread across a career.
