About this issue

Cover story on China is a firsthand report by Deputy Editor Dhiraj Nayyar, who spoke to a cross-section of Chinese who represent a nation on the threshold of change. The story points that everything is not as idyllic as the official media paints it to be in the sanctum sanctorum of Chinese power. The world's fastest growing economy is passing through a difficult phase. The so-called Chinese model of economic nirvana based on exports and state investment in infrastructure can no longer guarantee double-digit growth rate, which, in the first six months of this year fell, by Chinese standards, to a humiliating 7.6 per cent. The issue also has a look at the Kudumbasree vs Janasree spat in Kerala. Kudumbasree, which is hailed as the best model for poverty alleviation runs into trouble as the UDF govt tries to corner it by foisting Janasree, which is supported by the Congress. Another story on the murder case case of BJP activist Payyoli Manoj, which investigate the CPM's, jinx as all the six accused belongs to the party submitted petitions requesting polygraph test. The CPM activists moved to the court stating that they have taken the responsibility of the murder as per the party's instructions and actually they don't have any role in the murder. The case has exposed the ploy employed by political parties to save the real culprits in murder cases and to handover innocent party workers as murders to the police. The issue also has a satirical story on the marketing strategy of unholy affairs in the Kerala Church by the publishers and the instant fame the writer gets after the revelations. The tell-all books by ex-priests are tarnishing the image of the church in Kerala and nuns and the publishers in Kerala are now in a competitive spirit to have their share of the sexascapades of the holy men. The issue also looks into the economic reforms of the UPA, the imminent bus fare hike in kerala on the pretext of the hike in diesel prices and the never ending waste disposal problems based on the Vilappilsala waste processing plant controversy in Trivandrum and the dept trap the students of professional colleges faces in the state after getting educational loan from nationalized banks. The issue which pays tribute to the veteran actor Thilakn also features Shamna Kasim, Divya Sapndana, Sruthi Hasan.
