Hello Readers, Do you know what day it is today? Today is International Human Rights Day. It was on 10th December 1948 that the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights at the Palais de Chaillot in Paris, France. The Declaration commits all member countries to promote “universal respect for, and observance of human rights, and fundamental freedom for all without distinction to race, sex, language, or religion.” The day is marked by awarding the distinguished 5-yearly United Nations Prize in the field of Human Rights. Its previous recipients have been lawyer and statesman - Nelson Mandela, human rights activist working towards education and empowerment of Girl Child - Malala Yousafzai, Human Rights activist - Martin Luther King, American President - Jimmy Carter are the few among many other human rights campaigners. Also, since 1990, the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize is awarded on the 10th of December at the Oslo City Hall in Norway. This year, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has selected Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali for his work towards promoting peace and reconciliation (restoration of friendly terms) in Ethiopia and in East and Northeast African regions.
