In 2009, he and Sushma Swaraj were seen as the BJP’s GenNext leaders. And Jaitley was spoken about as a prime ministerial candidate. Both were earlier brought to the political centrestage by party patriarch L K Advani. But in a twist of fate, both departed in just 18 days, leaving behind their firm imprints. An astute strategist who worked behind the scenes to fuel the rise of the BJP, Jaitley rose from the lower rungs of the RSS, having been the Delhi University Students Union president as an ABVP activist. Jaitley soon rubbed shoulders with tall leaders after taking the plunge into politics during Emergency In less than three decades, he was . a Cabinet minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA government at the Centre. A food connoisseur, Jaitley had a tough time dealing with his diabetic condition, which ultimately made him opt for bariatric surgery in 2016. Two years later, he underwent kidney transplant. In the same year, doctors detected he was suffering from soft tissue cancer as well. In view of his poor health, Jaitley opted out of the Modi 2.0 Cabinet. On August 9 after a bout of breathlessness, he was admitted to AIIMS, where he breathed his last. A lawyer par excellence, Jaitley brought deep legal insight for the BJP and senior party leaders during the two-and-a-half decades of bitter political rivalry with ruling dispensations at the Centre. He proved to be an impregnable legal shield for both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah when they were pursued by investigating agencies during the UPA regime. Within the BJP, Jaitley fast emerged as a strategist after Advani drafted him into his core team in the early 1990s. He scripted the alliance between the BJP and the Janata Dal (U) to wrest power in Bihar in 2005 from the Lalu Prasad-led Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), which ruled the state for one-and-a-half decades. During this time he was also the party’s in-charge of Gujarat, which coincided with the emergence of Modi as a national leader. HIS `0 BILLS... P7 1 held in Kochi on suspicion of LeT ties, 3 in Coimbatore EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE @ Kochi/Coimbatore DRAMATIC scenes unfolded in the Ernakulam Judicial First Class Magistrate Court-I hall on Saturday as police detained a man who came to surrender before the court. Abdul Khader Raheem, 39, of Thrissur, was taken into custody by Ernakulam Central police on suspicion of having links with the six-member Lashkar-e-Toiba gang said to have sneaked into Tamil Nadu from Sri Lanka. It was a tit-for-tat for levy hikes announced by China on $75 billion of US imports. The ongoing trade war is bound to roil global markets, with Dow Jones plunging 600 points on Friday and S&P 500 registering its fourth straight weekly loss. It remains to be seen how Indian markets will factor in the US-China skirmish while responding to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s economic stimulus package announced on Friday . While China called out Trump’s bullying, Beijing is known to press all the wrong buttons ahead of bilateral and multilateral meets for diplomatic coercion. Why else did it time its retaliatory tariffs against US exports days before the G7 meet? China has tried to needle India that way on multiple occasions. But Trump is not someone who will grin and bear it, even if his country’s economy slips into recession. Won’t acquire land sans green nod: ONGC S V K R I S H N A C H A I TA N YA @ Chennai THE land acquisition process for drilling of 104 hydrocarbon wells in Cauvery delta region would commence only after environmental clearance is obtained, clarified Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) officials in response to a query raised by the Union environment ministry . Usually, the land acquisition process is initiated parallel to obtaining statutory clearances. However, the Office of ONGC’s Sub-Surface Manager of Cauvery Asset in Karaikal, in a letter dated July 29 to Member Secretary (Industrial Project-II) of environment ministry, said, “Land has not yet been acquired for these proposed 104 wells. ONGC’s decision might be the result of unrest against hydrocarbon projects and a Madras High Court ruling quashing land acquisition for the Chennai-Salem expressway The . Centre challenged the order in the Supreme Court. When the case came up for hearing on August 22, National Highways Authority of India said getting environmental clearance before land acquisition would be “like putting the cart before the horse”. Everyone in the BJP always depended on him for solutions to complex issues ... He never failed to recommend good restaurants to me L K Advani, BJP leader Had a long innings as Parliamentarian. His contributions to public life will forever be remembered Sonia Gandhi, Congress president ROM the benches of Lodhi Gardens to Supreme Court benches, from inner party chambers to Parliament’s Central Hall — a certain part of New Delhi will not be the same. More than the imposing structural edifices or the grandeur of Rajpath, what breathes life, character and colour to the capital city are the people who inhabit those structures of power and politics. And Arun Jaitley was the ultimate Lutyens insider — the one man who had a deft, definitive influence on what went on across many domains. Though he lived in South Delhi, except for a brief while when he had to reluctantly shift to a Lutyens bungalow earlier inhabited by George Fernandes, he had a sure spinner’s grip on how politics and power equations in the heart of the Indian republic shaped up in tangible and intangible ways. During Jaitley’s brief stint as a resident there, the bungalow was not quite gateless, but his doors were open for friends, followers and colleagues, both from politics, the legal fraternity and yes, the media. , It’s his accessibility and amiable nature that helped him create a charmed circle, something that served the BJP well in those 10 years in opposition. (Although, early during UPA-II, when a BJP return seemed a dim prospect, he confided to some of us at a private function that he was actively considering quitting politics and running for BCCI president!) In government, the jury will be out on his ministerial talent, especially as Finance Minister in Modi 1.0 — but always in evidence was a suave sharpness, wit and ability to analyse anything from world affairs, legal tangles, cut-and-dried economic issues to food with a riveting, anecdotal savoir faire. For those tracking the ups and downs of Indian politics, it was noticeable how the rise of Jaitley’s durbar, so to speak, went in tandem with the slow decline of the Left’s hold over the political discourse, through the phasing out of two such drawing rooms, that of Harkishen Singh Surjeet’s and Somnath Chatterjee’s. And, later the disappearing queues at 10 Janpath. Of course, L K Advani and A B Vajpayee laid the foundation of that shift with their mass appeal, but it was Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj — both 1952-born lawyer-turned-politicians — who built on it and created the atmospherics, with their oratory , gift of the gab and canniness.
