Officials of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD), which manages the affairs of the hill shrine, said the number of devotees increased by 20 per cent over the previous year. TTD Executive Officer (EO) Anil Kumar Singhal told the media that the TTD sold 31 lakh ‘laddus’ this year against 24 lakh ‘laddus’ sold during the festival last year. More than one lakh pilgrims had darshan on Monday, the penultimate day of the festival. On the last day of Brahmotsavam, Chakra Snanam was performed by the priests. Special prayers were offered to the idols of the deity, following which they were dipped in the waters of Swamy Pushkarini, a pond situated at the temple. The festival begun on September 30 with the Dwajarohanam (flag hoist- ing ceremony), where a flag with an image of Lord Garuda was hoisted atop the temple’s Dwajasthambam (flag pole). He said as part of the Govt ad blitzkrieg on Article 370 revocation continues Srinagar, For the second month running newspapers published from Kashmir are flooded with government advertisements listing the benefits of abrogation of Article 370 and 35A. The full front-page advertisements are appearing in prominent English and Urdu newspapers of Kashmir like Greater Kashmir and Aftab. “A single constitution for the entire country - How will Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh benefit?” is the headline of the advertisement that goes on to explain how “Article 370 and 35A were responsible for backwardness of J&K” and “How will this change now?” The advertisement says Article 370 and 35A were used to promote terror and block the state’s development journey. “For many years in the past, the state of J&K has been the victim of anti-national propaganda and terrorist actions against inno- cent citizens. The Article 370 and 35A became handy tools for mischievous elements to fan separatism and promote terror. These two articles kept the state away from the development processes in the country for a long time. The special status benefitted only a select few like Hurriyat leaders and people working for them.” It says that the revocation of Article 370 and 35A will bring in investment to the state and create employment opportunities while ‘Fix responsibility for Amritsar train disaster’ Amritsar, Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh lands in Bordeaux, France to receive first of 36 Rafale combat aircrafts, welcomed on arrival by Dassault Aviation CEO Éric Trappier on Tuesday. Ex-Haryana Congress chief working to cause dent to party New Delhi, After quitting the Congress, former Haryana unit chief Ashok Tanwar has decided to work for the party’s defeat in the state’s Assembly elections slated for October 21. His plan is to extend support to candidates from any party or even Independents in each constituency against the Congress. He, however, ruled out giving blanket support to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Speaking to IANS, Tanwar said that he will try to ensure that the Congress does not win more than five seats in Haryana’s 90-member Assembly. Tanwar, who quit last week after being replaced as state unit chief, said he will support candidates who he deems to be of good image. “Initially, I gave a slogan of ’85 paar’ (cross 85 seats) but now it will be Congress which will lose in at least 85 seats,” said Tanwar, who has already started touring the state. He has made his base in Rohtak, which is the stronghold of Congress leader and former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. On his next move, he has asked his supporters to wait. At the same time, he claims that many leaders from the Congress have made congratulatory calls to him and many have also messaged him on his decision to quit the party. Armed with supporters and the base of Scheduled Caste voters, Tanwar hopes to make a major dent to the Congress which he termed as ‘Hooda Congress’. The Scheduled Caste (SC) community is just behind the powerful Jats in the state in terms of numbers. The estimated share of Scheduled caste vote is around 22 per cent. The Congress has replaced Tanwar with Kumari Selja who is also from the SC community. The Congress party has very less time to control the damage done by Tanwar’s exit. A viral video of three Congress leaders discussing poll prospects in Haryana has made the situation even worse. security arrangements, more than 1,400 CCTV cameras were set up at vantage points to monitor the movement of devotees. Singhal added that in view of the increasing number of child kidnappings from the temple premises, around 1.42 lakh children accompanying the devotees were tagged with the details of their parents to easily trace them in case they get separated in the congregation. Hundreds of people comprising the next of kin of the victims of the train tragedy on Dussehra last year, held a demonstration on Tuesday here over alleged failure of the local administration to book those who were responsible for the disaster that claimed 61 lives. They also raised slogans against Navjot Singh Sidhu, their legislator and former Minister, for not keeping the promises made by him after the accident. Sidhu and his wife had promised to provide government jobs to the kin of each victim, to adopt children who had lost their earning parents and help widows meet life expenses. “We were told by Sidhu and his wife at the time of the accident that they will provide jobs to our families,” a protestor, Sunil Kumar told the media. Carrying the photo of his brother who died in the accident, he said no promise made by the Sidhu couple has been fulfilled till date. “For the past many days, we have been visiting his residence and we were told every time that Sidhu is out of town,” he added. “We are asking the state government to hand over the probe to the CBI so that who were responsible for the accident should be brought to book,” another protestor Sangeeta Rani added. At least 61 people were killed after a speeding train sliced through revellers watching a Ravana effigy go up in flames, near Joda Phatak in Amritsar on October 19, 2018. Sidhu and his wife has gone into hibernation since he quit the government in July, said a 20-year-old college student, who lost his father in the accident. Ramesh Kumar, who lost his son in the accident, said: “I got the compensation from the government. But Sidhu and his wife promised me to provide job for my second son as we lost the lone breadwinner.” A candlelight procession led by former Akali Dal minister Bikram Majithia was carried out here on Monday evening which saw the participation of the victims’ families. Majithia said three inquiries into the incident were undertaken by the government, but no action has been taken yet. He said the investigation conducted by the Jalandhar Divisional Commissioner was aimed at saving the Congressmen who were responsible for the incident. —IANS giving a boost to the education and health sectors. “Investors will pump in capital and resources, industries and services will be set up, employment opportunities will multiply, big educational institutes will proliferate, heath sector will grow.” The advertisement also touches upon the contentious issue of land and tries to assuage the fears of people that they won’t be compelled to sell their lands while at the same time mentions land prices will escalate in the state and match land prices in the rest of the country. “Land rates all over the country have increased many fold while rates in J&K have not changed much. This will change in the days to come. However fears of the people about loss of land and properties are not well founded. In fact there is no compulsion on anybody to part with his land. Anyone who does not want to sell his lands will have the full liberty not to do so. There will be no change in ownership due to removal of Article 370.” The advertisement claims that the abrogation of Article 370 will prevent the students from leaving the state and going to other parts of the country for higher studies. “20,000 students from J&K have to go to other parts of India to study. Now even this sector will boom due to the PPP model in vogue - no compulsion for students to go outside for education.” Why Premji visited RSS founder’s memorial at Nagpur Nagpur, After the India Inc bigwigs Ratan Tata and Rahul Bajaj, now veteran industrialist Azim Premji has visited the Hedgewar Smruti Mandir premises here and paid tributes at the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) founder’s memorial. The liaison department contacts noted personalities from different regions of the country and invites them to visit the Sangh. Whether, it was the speech of former President Pranab Mukherjee at the concluding ceremony of a Sangh event last year, or the arrival of Nobel laureate Kailash Satyarthi on the Vijayadashami festival on October 18 last year, all these happened as a result of the efforts of the liaison department, the RSS official added. Nagpur-based Sangh ideologue Dilip Deodhar told IANS: “The liaison department is working as an engine in the expansion of the Sangh.
