The building, located at Gali Sheesh Mahal, collapsed around 9.48 am, triggering a joint rescue operation involving the Delhi Police, National Disaster Response Force and Municipal Corporation of Delhi. Four workers have been pulled out of the debris so far. Two of them died of their injuries. Condition of two others is stable, DCP (Central) Rohit Rajbir Singh said. Construction work was underway on the third floor when the structure began to collapse. At least 10 workers were at the site, along with the contractor. They’re asked to evacuate as the building started giving way but some , failed to escape in time. A preliminary inspection indicated that the building was structurally unsafe. The collapse raised concerns about the structural safety of neighbouring buildings. One adjoining building has developed cracks, while a wall beneath a beam in the building on the other side has been damaged. The DCP said the construction was unauthorised and a case was registered under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with c u l p abl e h o m i c i d e n o t amounting to murder. The MCD suspended two engineers after the collapse. SUCHIT R A KALYA N MOHA N TY @ New Delhi THE Election Commission has issued a fresh work allocation order that requires its top IT official Seema Khanna to route files through a senior deputy election commissioner. The new order restores a layer of oversight an earlier order had removed. An order dated July 28 had relieved Deputy Election Commissioner Sanjay Kumar of the charge of IT and ICT and let Director-General (IT) Seema Khanna report directly to the poll panel. The decision was put in abeyance after the two election commissioners, Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, objected. The latest work allocation order, issued on Wednesday, requires Khanna to route files through Senior Deputy Election Commissioner Pawan Kumar Sharma. According to the poll panel’s submission to the Supreme Court, the July 28 order was not implemented. A panel note, issued as per decisions of its meeting held on September 26 and carrying the approval of the full Election Commission, said the letter to the Cabinet Secretary “was not related to any policy matter of the Commission or IT division”. It concerned the working of an officer on deputation to the EC, the note said. It clarified that the work re-distribution orders were “not actually implemented” after the objections of the two Commissioners, and the oversight over the IT division by the deputy election commissioner “was never actually withdrawn”. The initiative, assigned by the Union Ministry of Education, began just a fortnight ago and aims to create a comprehensive collection of epigraphic records relating to Shankaracharya for academic research and cur riculum development. “There are very few epigraphical records [known so far] that can be directly linked to Adi Shankaracharya. One of the earliest possible references is a copper-plate inscription discovered in Gujarat, dating to around 500-515 CE. Another significant reference is the 11th-century inscription found at Cholamadevi temple in Tiruchirappalli district, which refers to his philosophical work. If implemented effectively, this project could bring to light more historical evidence about Adi Shankaracharya, his travels and the spread of his philosophical teachings,” said G Sankaranarayanan, professor of Sahitya, National Sanskrit University . New slum rehab policy promises permanent homes to 5 lakh families PTI An u p V e r m a @ New Delhi The Rekha Gupta government on Thursday notified the Delhi Slum and Jhuggi Jhopri Relocation and Rehabilitation Policy 2026, paving the way for per, manent housing for an estimated 4-5 lakh families, or nearly 20 lakh people, living in slum settlements in the city . Eligible beneficiaries will be allotted one-bedroom, hall and kitchen (1-BHK) flats. The residential complexes will have schools, Anganwadi centres, healthcare f acilities and playgrounds. The policy extends rehabilitation benefits to eligible households in settlements established before January 1, 2025, bringing within its ambit families which may have been excluded from earlier schemes. It prioritises in-situ rehabilitation, with the government aiming to provide alter native homes at the existing settlement or within a three-kilometre radius to minimise disruption to residents’ livelihoods and access to major services. Preferential systems Families with persons with disabilities will receive priority for ground-floor flats, subject to certification requirements and availability. Housing units will be allotted jointly to married couples to protect their residential rights and minimise future disputes. Gupta said the objective was not merely to clear slums or redevelop settlements, but to provide eligible families permanent homes where they could live with security and dignity . A key safeguard prohibits removal of slum settlements without providing alternative accommodation to occupants.
