The deceased has been identified as Angrej Singh (30). Kala Singh, father of the deceased, told the Khalra police that his son was disturbed over illicit relations of his wife. He said his son had a quarrel with his wife Charanjit Kaur and her mother Binder Kaur, a resident of Toot, on Monday and consumed a poisonous substance. He died on way to a private hospital, Kala Singh said. They were involved in a firing incident at Pandori Gola village on March 14. SSP Ashwani Kapur said the arrested suspects were identified as Navraj Singh Nav and Gurlal Singh, residents of Varpal village. Their accomplices were identified as Satta, a resident of Naushehra Pannuan, and Jaisal, a resident of Chambal village. The SSP said a case under relevant sections of the IPC and the Arms Arm Act had been registered against the suspects by the Sadar police. The suspects had demanded Amritsar, April 30 The police have cracked a blind murder case of a woman in the Gobind Nagar area on the Sultanwind Road within 24 hours of the incident. The arrested suspect is a 17-yearold minor boy, a native of Uttar Pradesh (UP). Presently, he was residing at Drummanwala Bazar on Sultawind Road. The suspect is a hardcore criminal and is already facing two cases, including one of theft of Rs 6 lakh and another of an attempt to rape an eight-year-old girl. Shockingly, the deceased Harpreet Kaur, alias Rozi (42), used to help the suspect financially and also gave free tuition to him. The suspect was well aware about Rozi’s home and had planned a robbery at her residence. Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, Commissioner of Police (CP), Amritsar, said considering the sensitivity of the case, an investigation was conducted by Navjot Singh, ADCP-3, Gurindbir Singh, ACP (East), and Sukhbir Singh, SHO, Division B police station. The victim was unmarried. Her parents had died around 12 years ago and since then she had been living alone in the house. The victim was adopted by her uncle and aunt when she was a child. She was drawing her uncle’s pension, who retired from the Department of Post. She used to donate money to the poor and needy persons, besides distributing sweets among children in the neighbourhood. On April 28 evening, when a child came to victim’s house to ask for a chocolate, she found her lying in a pool of blood. The child raised an alarm and people from the neighbourhood gathered at the spot. The victim bore sharp weapon injuries behind her neck. The knife used in the crime was also found near the spot. PSEB Class VIII results: Gurleen Tarn Taran bags fourth Kaur bags second rank in state spot in state with 96.42% Niya tops district in Class XII exam by securing 98.2% Amritsar, April 30 The Punjab School Education Board (PSEB), Mohali, declared the Class VIII and XII results today. In Class VIII results, Gurleen Kaur from New Flower Senior Secondary School, Amritsar, secured second spot in the state with 99.67 per cent marks. This year, a total of 2, 91,917 students appeared in the PSEB Class VIII exams out of which 2,86,987 passed the exam. The pass percentage of girls was 98.83 per cent while that of boys is 97.84 per cent in Class VIII exams. The PSEB recorded an overall pass percentage of 98.31 percent for Class VIII. In the PSEB Class XII results, Amritsar district secured the top position in the state with a 97.27 per cent pass percentage. Niya Mahajan of Mussourie International Public School topped the district in Class XII exam by securing 491/500 marks (98.2 per cent). Shri Muktsar Sahib has the lowest pass percentage of 87.86 per cent. This year, a total of 2, 84,452 students appeared in the PSEB Class XII exam out of which 2, 64,662 passed the exam. The PSEB recorded an overall pass percentage of 93.04 per cent in Class XII exams. The pass percentage of girls was 95.74 per cent while that of boys was 90.74 per cent in the 12th grade. Tarn Taran has bagged the fourth position in the state out of 23 districts with 96.42 per cent pass percentage. A total number of 12,502 students had appeared in Class XII exam out of which 12,055 student were declared pass by the PSEB. Arashpreet Kaur of the Government Secondary School, Patti, secured 488/500 (97.60 per cent) and Sanobarpreet Kaur of United Senior Secondary 2 students make it to merit list in Class XII exam School, Khemkaran, got 487/500 (97.40 per cent) marks and bagged a place in the state merit list. In the PSEB Class VII results, Abiraj Singh of the Sri Bala Ji Senior Secondary School, Khemkaran, got 590/600 marks, Mehakpreet Kaur of Shaheed Udham Singh Senior Secondary School, Sarai Talwandi, secured 590/600 marks and Khushpreet Kaur of Government Senior Secondary School, Kot Budha, got 589/600. Passenger footfall crosses 30L at city’s international airport Charanjit Singh Teja Tribune News Service Amritsar, April 30 Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport has achieved a significant milestone as the passenger footfall has crossed 30 lakh (3 million) during the 2023-24 fiscal. Sameep Singh Gumtala, global convener, FlyAmritsar Initiative, said analysis of the recent data released by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for March 2024 revealed that the Amritsar airport recorded a footfall of 30,85,598 passengers till March 31, 2024. This shows a growth of 22.6 per cent in passenger footfall as compared to the previous year, which recorded the arrival of 25,16,518 passengers at the airport. Of the total footfall, 9, 81,405 were international and 21, 04,193 domestic passengers. This indicates a 30 per cent increase in international and a 19.5 per cent increase in domestic passengers as compared to the previous year. Gumtala further said, the position of Amritsar airport in terms of total passenger footfall had gone up from 25 to 23. Currently, six Indian and five foreign carriers operate from the Amritsar airport, connecting with 13 domestic and nine international destinations, including Dubai, Sharjah, Doha, Rome, Milan, London Gatwick, Birmingham, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Sixty-five flights depart and arrive at the airport ferrying approximately 10,000 passengers every day. VISHAL KUMAR Wheat stocked in grain markets soaked in rain At least 61% of grains procured in mandis yet to be lifted by state agencies Amritsar, April 30 Huge stocks of procured and unsold wheat lying at grain markets of the district were soaked in moderate showers in the region on Monday evening. The showers which continued for nearly 45 minutes also affected the wheat crop, especially in fields, which were flattened by previous rains. Gopal Singh, a resident of Naushera Khurd village near here, said, “The grains which are still in wheat stalks have started to turn black as germination has started due to excess moisture.” He said, “A large area under the crop is yet to be harvested. Farmers are worried that inclement weather conditions would further damage the crop.” Another farmer from Pan- doori village said nearly 25 per cent of grains were affected by rain. He said farmers would face problem at the time of crop procurement. He said untimely showers during the wheat season would affect the yield of the crop. Meanwhile, huge stocks of wheat procured by the government procurement agencies lying at grain markets were soaked in the rain. Most stocks are vulnerable to rain as these are lying in the open. Though 3.81 lakh metric tonnes (MT) of wheat crop has been procured in the district during the ongoing season, only 1.47 lakh MT has been lifted so far from mandis. With 61 per cent of the procured stocks lying in dana mandis, the showers have added to woes of commission agents and labourers. c m y b Amritsar, April 30 A city-based NGO — Shiksha — organised a meeting during which the history of the establishment of the IIM was traced by its officebearers here today. They mentioned the special contribution of the then Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, and Anil Joshi, then Local Government Minister, Punjab Government, in setting up the institution. Joshi said if voted to power, he will go all out to develop the IIM as a centre of excellence for agricultural entrepreneurship, which would open new gateways for research in crop diversification, marketing and various other related fields, keeping in view that Punjab was an agrarian state. On behalf of Amritsar Vikas Manch (AVM), its office-bearers — Dr Charanjit Singh Gumtala, Manmohan Singh Brar and Principal Kulwant Singh Ankhi — also attended the meeting. They said any political leader who helped in establishing a Central project in Amritsar deserved the rightful credit. They also handed over a demand letter to Anil Joshi on the occasion. AVM office-bearers said they had already submitted demand letters to Aam Aadmi Party candidate Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal, Congress nominee Gurjeet Singh Aujla and BJP aspirant Taranjit Singh Sandhu. The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising four eminent persons as trustees.
The Tribune, the largest selling daily in North India, publishes news and views without any bias or prejudice of any kind. Restraint and moderation, rather than agitational language and partisanship, are the hallmarks of the paper. It is an independent newspaper in the real sense of the term.
The English edition apart, the 133-year-old Tribune has two sister publications, Punjabi Tribune (in Punjabi) and Dainik Tribune (in Hindi).
