The police also recovered two touch phones from his possession. He was arrested by the jail staff during checking when they found four packets containing 149 gm of opium. The contraband was hidden in the turban and shoe soles by him. A jail official wishing not to be named confirmed his arrest. He said after seizure of opium, the jail authorities searched his bike from which they recovered Rs 8,400 “drug money”, besides a fake ID of the Jail Department. His two mobile phones were also confiscated for further investigation to establish his links with jail inmates. Following a complaint by Sahib Singh, Assistant Superintendent, Jail, the Islamabad police station registered a case under Sections 18, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act and Sections 42 and 52-A of the Prison Act against Jasdeep Singh. His preliminary questioning led to the nomination of another jail inmate identified as Avtar Singh in the case. Jasdeep was handed over to the police by the jail authorities for further interrogation. The police said Jasdeep was associated with NALCO. He used to visit jail twice a week for collecting samples, testing and delivering medication of inmates suffering from HIV . They alleged that bogus members were added in ration cards without knowledge of ration card holders to embezzle food grains by issuing fake allotment in formers names. Meeting dwells on making city tobacco free Tribune News Service Amritsar, May 1 A meeting of the district-level coordination committee was held today under the chairmanship of Additional Deputy Commissioner Jyoti Bala Mattu to discuss the National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP). Officials of the police, education and rural development departments, private colleges, municipal corporation and members of various NGOs were present at the meeting. Addressing officials, Dr Jaganjot Kaur, Deputy Director, Dental, said all departments had to take joint measures to make Punjab a tobaccofree state. Many villages in the district had become tobacco free, she said, while adding that there was still a lot of work to be done in the urban areas. The drug was smuggled from across border through drone. Giving details, Rakesh Kaushal, DIG, border range, said the police got specific inputs regarding smuggling of heroin through drone in the Gharinda police station area. Following the tip-off, the Punjab Police coordinated with the BSF authorities and launched a search operation in the designated area. THREE HELD WITH DRUGS The Amritsar (Rural) police arrested three drug peddlers in two separate incidents here on Tuesday and recovered over 265 grams of heroin and 50 grams of opium from their possession. Mandeep Singh of Sainsra Kalan village was arrested with 265 grams of heroin by the Rajasansi police while Hardeep Singh of Shampur village and Harmanjit Singh of Golden Colony on Fatehgarh Churian were held with 50 grams of opium by the Kamboh police. under the Gharinda police station here. Earlier, Jagroop was arrested in November 2023 in connection with cross-border smuggling case. He was produced in a local court and brought on two-day police remand. More recoveries were likely to be made during his interrogation, the DIG said. He further said the police had adopted zero tolerance approach against drug traffickers. Coordination meetings were being held between the police and the BSF authorities from time to time, he added. Tribune News Service Amritsar, May 1 Residents of Ranjit Avenue and visitors to Amrit Anand Park in E block of the locality are irked over choked sewer lines because of which stinking water overflows in the park. Residents of Housing Board Colony and Ranjit Avenue have been facing the problem of choked sewer lines for the last several months. The Amritsar Improvement Trust (AIT) sent workers to resolve the issue, but residents wanted a permanent solution. The sewer water has now entered Amrit Anand Park, which is among major parks of the city. Stinking water has accumulated on pathways in the park. Jagjit Singh Suchu, president, Ranjit Avenue E Block Welfare Association, said, Sewer water flows in Amrit Anand Park at Ranjit Avenue in Amritsar. “Office-bearers of the association met Ashok Talwar, Chairman, AIT, for diversion of sewerage heading from bypass road to alongside Amrit Anand Park to resolve the issue of sewer line blockage in E block, Ranjit Avenue, and Housing Board Colony, Sector 3. But nothing has been done so far. He said candidates could also apply online via portal or app for registration. — TNS Over 50% fields harvested; crop arrival reaches 4.37 lakh MT in dist District & Sessions Judge inspects jail Tribune News Service Amritsar, May 1 With an arrival of 4.37 lakh metric tonnes (MT) of wheat in grain markets of the district till Wednesday evening, over 50 per cent of harvesting of the crop is complete. A total arrival of 7.5 lakh MT wheat is expected to arrive in mandis during the ongoing harvesting season. Agriculture officials said in many areas, late sown varieties of wheat were yet to be harvested. The government procurement agencies purchased 44,492 MT of grains today while private buyers bought 2168 MT. So far, the government agencies have procured a total of 3.90 lakh MT of wheat while private traders have purchased 38,256 MT. The district has recorded a total procurement of 4.28 Lakh MT. Mandi officials said 92 per cent of the crop, which arrived in markets till date, c m y b was procured and only 9,214 MT was left unsold. Out of 4.28 lakh MT wheat procured by government agencies, only 1.73 lakh MT had been lifted from markets so far. Grain markets in the district still have 2.54 lakh MT of procured wheat stocks, which are yet to be lifted. Officials said nearly 68 per cent of the procured crop had been lifted. Till yesterday evening, 62 per cent of the crop was lifted, said an official. He said work had been streamlined and the entire stock would be lifted within a few days.
