Investigating officer (IO) Kashmir Singh said the suspect was identified as Binder, a resident of Saidpur Jhirri village. He said the victim had complained to the police that the suspect conspired with her son Love Jeet to kidnap her on the pretext of marriage. The victim said Lovejeet repeatedly raped her and impregnated her. The IO said a case under Sections 376 (rape), 120-B (criminal conspiracy), and 506 of the IPC had been registered against the suspect and her son, who was arrested earlier. OC TWO BOOKED FOR DOWRYHARASSMENT Phagwara: The Bilga police have booked a mother-son duo for dowry harassment. Investigating officer (IO) Satpal said the suspects were identified as Manpreet Singh, and his mother Satya Devi, residents of Mohalla Suraj Nagar (North), Moga City. Mandeep Lochan, a resident of Talwann village, who is wife of Manpreet Singh, complained to the police that her husband and mother-in-law harassed her for bringing more dowry and mentally tortured her. The IO said a case under Sections 406 (breach of trust) and 498-A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) of the IPC had been registered against the suspects after an inquiry. OC MAN HELD FOR SNATCHINGS Phagwara: The Lohian Khas police have arrested a man, who is involved in snatchings, in the area. Investigating Officer (IO) Major Singh said the suspect was identified as Sonu, a resident of Toti village falling under the Sultanpur Lodhi police station in Kapurthala district. He said the suspect was intercepted at a naka and Rs 500, five mobile phones, four charges and two sharp weapons were recovered for his possession. The IO said a case under Section 379-B (snatching) of the IPC was registered against the suspect and the motorcycle he used for snatching mobile phones impounded by the police. OC Two booked on charge of cheating Our Correspondent Nurmahal, May 2 The police have booked two persons on charge of cheating residents. Station House Officer (SHO) Varinder Pal Singh the suspects were identified as Anil Kumar, a resident of Bhodipur village, and Deepak Kumar, a resident of Khuhi Kherra village in Fazilka district. Gurdeep Singh, a resident of Tagarr village, complained to the Jalandhar (Rural) SSP that the suspects were managing a group on a social media site through which they were holding a lucky draw. He said they lured people to invest Rs 299 per person and had fixed a date for the draw, but it was never opened. He said the suspects cheated may residents of crores of rupees. The SHO said a case under Sections 420 (cheating) of the IPC and Section 66 (D) of the Information Technology Act had been registered against the suspects. Maan kept his distance from BJP harps on corruption charges against civic body Says funds for Smart City project misused Jalandhar, May 2 The BJP has accused the local municipal corporation of corruption and alleged misuse of funds worth crores granted by the Central Government for development works. Addressing a press conference at the BJP’s state office in Jalandhar, party district president Sushil Sharma reiterated charges of bungling in the Smart City project and sought a high-level probe. He alleged that fake tractor-trailers plied in MC workshops, besides levelling charges of hiring fake staff and opening fake bank accounts against the civic body. Sharma sought strict action against those found guilty of corrupt practices. Speaking on the occasion, Sheetal Angural, MLA from Jalandhar West, demanded from the MC Commissioner that action should be taken against MC officials who had squandered hardearned money of the people. Former MLA KD Bhandari also demanded a check on corruption in the MC. Bhandari said funds given by the Centre were misused by the MC. Car owner Raveen Virdi, a resident of Mohalla Kaulsar, told the police that he went home after parking his car in a park, but found it stolen the next morning. The police have registered a case under Section 379 of the IPC in this regard. In another incident, a motorcycle parked outside house in Urban Estate was stolen on Wednesday night. Bike owner Jaspal Parmar told the police that he parked his two-wheeler outside his house. Next monring, he found that his bike had been stolen. A case has been registered by the police in this connection. EVMs, VVPATs randomised in presence of reps of political parties Entire process videographed |Parties express satisfaction Our Correspondent Hoshiarpur, May 2 Under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissionercum-District Election Officer Komal Mittal, the first randomisation of electronic voting machines (EVMs) and voter verified paper audit trails (VVPATs) was done in the presence of representatives of all political parties contesting the Lok Sabha elections. The District Election Officer (DEO) said EVMs were used on the instructions of the Election Commission of India (ECI) in the presence of representatives of political parties. The DEO said the process of randomisation of VVPAT machines was completed with the software developed by the ECI. During randomisation of voting machines, group assistant returning officers of the district were given 20 per cent ballot units, 20 per cent control units and 30 per cent VVPAT reserve, apart from counting the polling stations falling in their respective Assembly segments. She said voting machines were allotted to Assistant Returning Officers of the seven Assembly constituencies through randomisation. After segregating machines, these would be given to Group Assistant Returning Officers on May 3 and May 4 from 8.30 am to 7 pm. Former SAD MLA Pawan Tinu, who joined the AAP recently, visited Jalandhar and held meetings with those, who were “ready” to switch their sides. Now, with Pawan Tinu getting a AAP ticket for the Lok Sabha elections, party leaders think that finally, they would have their “say” in the municipal corporation (MC). “We quit the Congress and joined the AAP because we thought that it would be easier for us to get work done in the municipal corporation. But, soon we found that there were two or three people, who had all the powers, and we didn’t have any say. We felt less important. None of us was ❝ Workers are elated after Pawan Tinu got ticket. Woman dies after fall from speeding bus Phagwara, May 2 A 68-year-old woman died after falling from a speeding bus near Goraya yesterday. The deceased was identified as Balbir Kaur of DhesianKaanna village near Goraya. Lakhwinder Singh, son of the deceased, told the police that his mother went to the Civil Hospital at Wadhala village for medicines. When she was returning home, the mishap occurred. The bus driver took a turn at high speed and his mother fell down from the door steps. She was taken to a hospital in Jalandhar where she succumbed to her injuries. Rurrka Kalan police post incharge ASI Charanjit Singh said a case was registered against bus driver Bunty who managed to escape. Nakodar Deputy Superin- tendent of Police (DSP) Kulwinder Singh Virk said the suspects were identified as Parminder Kaur of Kang Jagir village and Vijay Kumar Momi of Bhar Singhpura village. Aman- deep Kaur, a resident of Bhardwajian village, complained to the Jalandhar (Rural) SSP that she paid Rs 4.50 lakh to the suspects for facilitating her migration abroad. The victim said she was neither sent abroad nor her money returned by the suspects, who prepared false documents and cheated her. The DSP said a case was registered against the suspects. — OC
