Ludhiana, May 14 Seizures of illegal and prohibited material during the ongoing model code of conduct (MCC) for the General Election to the 18th Lok Sabha have touched Rs 33 crore in Ludhiana district, official figures have revealed. The recoveries were affected since March 16 when the Election Commission of India (ECI) had imposed the MCC while announcing the election schedule in the country. The seizures made in Ludhiana were sixth highest in the state, where the recoveries worth a whopping Rs 604 crore have been made during the past less than two months of the poll code so far. The recoveries included unaccounted cash, liquor, drugs, narcotics, precious metals, freebies and other items, which were illegal and prohibited under the MCC guidelines. He also focused on ‘shramik nyay’, ensuring labourers’ rights and welfare, and ‘hissedari nyay’, promoting social justice for marginalised communities. Lastly, he highlighted ‘nari nyay’, dedicated to empowering women and promoting gender equality. Warring said the Congress had a clear mission which was aimed at 100 per cent welfare of people. He announced that the Congress had guaranteed to waive off loans of all farmers. Besides, he said, there would be legal guarantee for the MSP . He said the loan waiver would not be a one-time affair but there will be a permanent ‘loan relief commission’, which would keep on examining from time to time the need for loan waiver for farmers. “If the AAP government can take loans for publishing and broadcasting advertisements across the country with hardly any benefit to the state, why can’t it take similar loans for providing relief to farmers?” he asked while remarking whether it was AAP the BJP or SAD, they , had been giving only ‘jumlas’ (fake promises). — TNS election nakas (check-posts) set up across the state between March 16 and May 13. He said Punjab had ranked fourth in the country in terms of the seizures while Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Rajasthan have stood first, second and third, respectively. Punjab’s national ranking has gone up from fifth in April to fourth in May. Sibin said the maximum seizures amounting to Rs 457.7 crore was made by the state police, followed by Rs 25.51 crore worth recoveries by the Border Security Force (BSF), Rs 15.17 crore by the Income Tax Department, Rs 9.26 crore by the state Excise Department, Rs 5.3 crore by state Goods and Services Tax/Commercial Tax Department, Rs 4.7 crore by the Customs Department, and Rs 3.42 crore by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), in different parts of the state. District-wise seizures showed that Jalandhar topped the state with highest recoveries worth Rs 147.25 crore, followed by Amritsar Rs 123.13 crore, Tarn Taran Rs 70.67 crore, Fazilka Rs 56.69 crore and Ferozepur Rs 56.68 crore. Among other districts, Ludhiana logged recoveries amounting to Rs 32.73 crore, Gurdaspur Rs 21.82 crore, Kapurthala Rs 7.77 crore, Hoshiarpur Rs 5.42 crore, Nawanshahr Rs 1.2 crore, Ropar Rs 1.69 crore, Mohali Rs 5.05 crore, Fatehgarh Sahib Rs 64.5 lakh, Moga Rs 6.96 crore, Muktsar Rs 2.05 crore, Faridkot Rs 1.85 lakh, Bathinda Rs 5.46 crore, Mansa Rs 1.56 crore, Sangrur Rs 12.32 crore, Barnala Rs 7.29 crore, Patiala Rs 8.36 crore, Pathankot Rs 21.44 crore and Malerkotla district seized cash and other material amounting to Rs 6.03 crore during the past less than two months. “Enforcement agencies in the state have conducted extensive operations, resulting in the confiscation of cash, liquor, drugs, precious metals and freebies valued at Rs 604.09 crore since the implementation of the MCC for the poll,” the CEO said. He said the seizures comprised cash amounting to Rs 13.11 crore, liquor valued at Rs 18.54 crore, drugs worth Rs 546.84 crore, precious metals amounting to Rs 18.58 crore, freebies valued at Rs 6.77 crore and other items worth Rs 25 lakh, adding that 24 enforcement agencies from the Centre and state were operating 24x7 in the state to check any illegal activity and smuggling of prohibited commodities during the poll code. The complainant, Majorjit Singh, from Model Town said he had got around 40 tonnes of iron loaded in each truck (about 80 tonnes in total), which was to be delivered at Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir. The vehicles were loaded on April 3. The complainant said about a week ago, he got a call from the party in Kathua that the stock did not reach them. Majorjit said he started probing the matter on his own and got to know that both truck drivers Harjit and Harwinder, in connivance with three more persons, had fled with the stock, which costs Rs 50 lakh. The police are looking into the matter and no arrest had been made so far in the case. The initiative aims to accelerate the pace of village development. Water from closed tailings, which had not reached the fields for several years, has now been directed to the fields for groundwater conservation and reduced electricity consumption. I will always be accessible to you in Ludhiana”. — TNS 3,273.03 (Source: CEO, figures in rupees lakh from March 16 to May 13) Man held with 700 cases of illicit liquor Ludhiana, May 14 The CIA 2, under the leadership of Inspector Beant Juneja, has arrested Prakash Chander from near Sabzi Mandi, Basti Jodhewal, for carrying 700 cases of English liquor in an illegal manner. The suspect belongs to Rajasthan. During interrogation, he admitted that Surjit Singh, a contractor in Rajasthan, had asked him to reach near the Bahadurke road Sabzi Mandi, where his other accomplices would put crates filled with vegetables and fruits on liquor cases to hide the alcohol and nobody could find out the same. On checking near Sabzi mandi, the liquor was found by the police and the suspect was arrested. A case has been registered against Prakash and Surjit under Sections 420, 120 B and 201 of the IPC by the Jodhewal police. PO arrested A proclaimed offender (PO), Bunty Singh, alias Baba, was arrested by the Daba police. He was wanted in a case under Sections 427, 506, 148, 149, 269 and 336 of the IPC. He was declared a PO in June 2022. The daba police arrested the accused from the Daba area. — TNS Youth dies in fatal mishap Tribune News Service Tribune News Service Ludhiana, May 14 Discrepancies have been found in the dope tests being conducted at civil hospitals in the district. Civil Surgeon Jasbir Singh Aulakh has taken a strict note and shot a letter to the senior medical officers (SMOs) concerned, seeking explanation. Discrepancies have been found at the civil hospitals in Ludhiana, Raikot and Jagraon. Dr Aulakh said at the Civil Hospital, Ludhiana, a few cases came forward where dope tests were earlier tested positive but later turned negative after a few days. The tests were done in March and April. At Civil Hospital, Ludhiana, an applicant, Harjit Singh, got his test done on March 27 and on April 1. In the record book of March 27, it is stated that the sample of the applicant was taken on April 1. The question arises is if the sample was collected on April 1, how was the test conducted on March 27 and where and when Ludhiana, May 14 A youth, Dinesh Kumar, lost his life in a fatal accident while saving his life from miscreants. According to information, the complainant, Bhupinder Singh, said he, along with was his sample taken? The second case dates to April 2 where the applicant tested positive and the test was repeated on April 27 and the report was negative. If the first report was positive, how can the same person test negative after 25 days, the Civil Surgeon questioned. Similar cases has been found in Jagraon and Raikot civil hospitals. An applicant got his test conducted in January at Jagraon and tested positive and the same applicant repeated his test at the Raikot hospital and he was tested negative. Though the father’s name of the applicant is different, rest all details such as age and phone number are same. The Civil Surgeon has sought explanation on the same. He lost control over bike while saving his life from miscreants following him, his friends three other friends, Rohit Saini, Nikhil Kumar and Dinesh Kumar, were returning to their homes on May 13 when around 10 persons on bikes started following them. Near Police Division No. 6, Dholewal Chowk, the suspects tried to stop them. In panic, the bike on which Dinesh and Nikhil were travelling got imbalanced and hit the power pole near Raju Sweet Shop, Daba Road. Afterwards, the miscreants fled the scene and Dinesh was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. A case has been registered on the basis of a complaint filed by Bhupinder.
