On the night of May 17, an angry mob of locals entered two universities in the capital city, broke the windows of the hostels and targeted foreign nationals, especially Indian and Pakistani nationals. “They attacked the foreign students and misbehaved with girls. One of my acquaintances suffered a broken jaw and a few others sustained m i n o r i n j u r i e s, ” s h a r e d Fayzan. Following the mob violence, the Indian embassy released a statement that the “situation is presently calm” and advised all students to stay indoors and contact the Mission in case of any problems. However, many Indian students that TNIE had contacted expressed fear as locals were circulating hate messages on TikTok and other social media platforms. “The driver of a taxi I had previously travelled in Local mobs are seen attacking foreign nationals at Bishkek on Friday sent me a video of the mob violence and threatened to beat me as well,” said a student from Ut- tar Pradesh. While students living in university hostels shared that there are local police and Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) deployed outside the campus, those living in private accommodations do not have the same kind of security . “Students living in flats have been asked to not step out of their accommodations. In case of an emergency they have been , advised to carry their visas and passports,” said a student from Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, who did not want to be named. “However, that does not make any difference. The mob does not look into the passports before attacking,” his friend added. The violence, which started following an alleged altercation between the locals and Egyptians on May 13, has led to a series of incidents where foreign nationals have been targeted. He wants to register victory with an eye-popping margin so as to establish himself as the political heir of the R a m Vi l a s legacy . Chirag’s party is an ally of BJPled NDA. He is locked in a straight fight with former state minister and RJD chief Lalu Prasad’s trusted lieutenant Shiv Chandra Ram. Unlike in 2019 when he lost to Chirag’s uncle Pashupati Kumar Paras from this seat, Ram, 53, is posing a stiff challenge to Chirag, 41, this time around. Chirag’s decision to shift from Jamui — which elected him twice to the Lok Sabha — to Hajipur put him on a collision course with Paras. Whether or not the sulking Paras would damage Chirag’s prospects remains to be seen. “This time Chirag is set to create history by registering his victory by a record margin. RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav had lampooned Chirag as Modi’s Hanuman recently . At a recent rally Modi had lavished , praise on Chirag, saying he considers him his son. “Chirag is a true representative of Bihar, the future of Bihar. He is also a successful MP. If you vote for Chirag, it will directly go to Modi’s account,” the PM said. Making a similar pitch, Tejashwi had told his party at a recent campaign address, “If you want to see me as chief minister, then ensure victory of Shiv Chandra Ram from Hajipur.” It was a clear message to RJD workers to rally around Ram.
