In May 1973, the first ever Conference of Asian social scientists was held in Simla under the joint auspices of the Indian Council of Social Science Research, the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, and the Indian National Commission for Co- operation with UNESCO. Thirty delegates and observers from fourteen countries of Asia participated in the Conference to discuss problems related to teaching and research in social sciences. Social Sciences in Asia brings together the portrayals of social science situation ob- taining in the various Asian countries. Senior and knowledgeable scholars have presented country profiles for Afghanis- tan, Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Nepal, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. In addition, the speeches delivered at the inaugural and valedictory sessions have also been reproduced. Professor Yogesh Atal, editor of this volume, has contributed the lead essay. The book fills a long felt need; it will be of use to all those interested in Asia and in social sciences.
