Sukhbir Singh, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Tarn Taran city, informed that the injured gangster has been identified as Raman Bharti, a resident of Beas. The DSP said that the police, acting on the information collected from sources, installed a naka on the Nagoke canal bridge when at around midnight, an SUV (Scorpio) appeared. The police team chased the SUV and the gangster driving the vehicle fired at the police when he was signalled to stop. The police team too fired at the vehicle. The gangster tried to run away from the spot and fired at the police team. In retaliatory firing by the police, the gangster received a bullet in his leg and fell down. The accused demanded Rs 50 lakh in extortion money from him. The police have registered a case against Tangra and launched further probe. The victim stated to the police that he first received a call on his WhatsApp number from a virtual number on October 8 and then on several occasions. He said initially, he did not take the calls seriously, but when he repeatedly got the calls, he became frightened. The latest call was received on Tuesday. He said the accused now threatened to kill him in case he failed to cough up the money. Tejinder Singh, investigating officer, said that a case has been registered and further investigations are in progress. A senior police official said that Gagandeep Singh aka Daddi Tangra has around 15 criminal cases against him at various police stations including that of extortion. "He has been evading arrest for the past several years while efforts were on to nab him," he said. Amritsar, November 4 The Kathunanal police have booked the driver of a tipper truck for the late night road mishap that claimed two lives while injuring 25 other bus passengers. The incident occurred near Gopalpura village falling under Kathunangal police station here. Sub-inspector Narinder Singh, investigating officer, said that the deceased were identified as Rajwinder Kaur and a 13-year-old boy, Sehajdeep Singh, both residents of Amritsar. The unknown driver of the bus had escaped from the scene. The police have seized the truck and the private bus involved in the mishap and efforts are on to identify the truck driver, sub-inspector Narinder Singh said. Tribune News Service Amritsar, December 4 With the arrest of two alleged drug smugglers, the Amritsar rural police today claimed to have busted a cross-border drug cartel and recovered 2 kg of heroin from their possession. The accused have been identified as Prem Singh, a resident of Attari, and Omkar Singh alias Happy, of Hargobindpura area located on Wadali Road, Chheharta here. Yaadwinder Singh, Deputy Superintendent of Police, said the police had received information that the accused were in direct contact with Pakistani smugglers and were sourcing heroin from across the international border for supply to various districts of Punjab. The Gharinda police team intercepted them on the India Gate-Khassa route and recovered 2 kg of heroin from their possession. A case under the NDPS Act has been registered at Gharinda police station. The DSP said that further investigations are underway. Cross-border drug cartel busted, 2 kg of heroin seized Amritsar, December 4 As per the District election office, a total of 148 candidates have filed their nominations for Zila Parishad zones and 906 candidates have filed nominations for Block Samiti zones. Meanwhile, amid the ongoing allegations of misuse of police and civil administration machinery by the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to stop candidates from filing their nominations for the Zila Parishad and Block Samiti elections, Congress leader from Rajasansi constituency, Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria, today accused the ruling party of orchestrating an attack on its sarpanch Surjit Singh from Pindi Saidan village. Sarkaria complained that the attack on Surjit Singh was made in front of the police. "Earlier in the day, AAP leaders tore the nomination papers of the party candidate for Block Samiti. When he put his papers in order again and went to submit, he was attacked as a result of which he received a serious injury on his head." Meanwhile, SAD MLA from Majitha, Ganieve Kaur, also alleged that their partymen were not allowed to file their nominations. Ganieve Kaur also led a protest at the SDM office in Majitha and alleged that their candidates ZILA PARISHAD POLLS were not allowed to enter the BDPO office. She accused the AAP government of murdering democracy. The SAD MLA also requested the Election Commission to take notice of the high-handedness of the ruling party. "If the AAP wants its members to win the elections, then this drama of elections must not be enacted," he said. Meanwhile, in a press release issued by the Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Election Officer Dalvinderjit Singh, it was stated that the State Election Commission has appointed Sandeep Hans as election observer for Zila Parishad and Block Samiti elections. However, the District Election Office failed to release a list of the number of candidates who have filed their nominations for contesting elections till the filing of this report. It being the last day for filing of nominations, the candidates were allowed to submit their papers till 3 pm. The elections for 24 zones of Zila Parishad and 195 zones of 10 Block Samitis would be held on December 17. Till yesterday evening, the District Election Office had received a total of 25 nominations for Zila Parishads and 164 for Block Samitis.
