OC Jalandhar, December 4 Even as the Shiromani Akali Dal, BJP and Congress have , been targeting the ruling government over the alleged police high-handedness during the filing of nomination papers for Block Samiti and Zila Parishad elections, Jalandhar witnessed a different battle — the Congress versus the Congress. For the past four days since the beginning of the process of filing of papers, there had been reports that Jalandhar MP Charanjit Singh Channi’s son Navjeet Singh had been holding parallel meetings in Phillaur against those of Congress MLA Vikramjit Chaudhary. Both leaders reportedly kept assuring their respective candidates of securing the party symbol. However, today, the MLA prevailed. MLA Chaudhary accompanied the Congress candidates Harjinder Kaur from Bundala Zone, Shindo from Dosanjh Kalan Zone, Rajwinder from Apra Zone, and Reshmo from Ganna Pind Zone today to file their nominations for Zila Parishad elections at the DC office. Three candidates, who reportedly had the support of Channi’s son, have also filed their papers from Phillaur Block Samitis but they could not get the party symbols. A similar tussle unfolded in Phagwara, December 4 After completetion of police remand of two days, alleged gangster Virender Pratap Singh, alias Kala Rana, who was brought to Phagwara from Gurugram’s Bhondsi jail on a production warrant on Tuesday, was again produced before the Judicial Magistrate today, who sent him in judicial custody. No lessons learnt from woman’s death in mishap, Phillaur highway stretch still waterlogged Have made several complaints, now fed up with admn officials’ approach, say villagers Aparna Banerji Tribune News Service Police personnel in front of the Civil Hospital after the murder of a Hadiabad youth on Thursday. Phagwara,December 4 Bholath MLA Sukhpal Khaira has levelled serious allegations against the police, claiming that law enforcement officials in the constituency are misusing their authority to influence the outcome of the upcoming Block Samiti and Zila Parishad elections. According to Khaira, a series of police action, including late FIR additions and targeted raids, are contributing to environment of intimidation for Congress candidates and workers. Khaira particularly referred to FIR registered at Subhanpur in connection with alleged irregularities during floodrelief distribution. He stated that the case was lodged nearly four months after the reported incident and asserted that it was politically motivated with the intention of discouraging participation by opposition candidates. The MLA highlighted an incident on December 4, when Baljinder Singh, in-charge of police chowki, Nadala, accompanied by a team of personnel, conducted an early morning raid at the residence of Gurjit Singh, a Congress candidate for Block Samiti Zone, Chakoke. Khaira said the raid occurred despite the fact that Gurjit and others named in the case had already secured anticipatory bail from the court of the Additional Sessions Judge-I, Kapurthala, two days earlier. The court order, he emphasized, specifically noted that custodial interrogation was not required as recoveries had been completed. He termed the police action a violation of judicial direction and alleged that it appeared to benefit the rival candidate from the constituency. Khaira further alleged that additional names of Congress leaders and workers have been recently incorporated into the FIR, including local office-bearers and nominees affiliated with the party. He claimed these additions were based on statements obtained under pressure from a political opponent and expressed concern that more names could be added as the election process advances. Khaira urged the State Election Commission to intervene, stating that free and fair elections are only possible when law enforcement agencies function independently and without political influence. He demanded the immediate suspension of SI Baljinder Singh and action against senior police officers allegedly supervising the operations, along with assurances that candidates are able to file nominations and campaign without fear or interference. Sarpanch Charanjit Singh’s relative Nirmal Singh said, “There is water accumulated even today on the same spot. When vehicles pass, the water splashes and one more accident took place today. We are fed up with the administration’s dilly dallying tactics. We do not know what purpose the BDPO’s suspension will serve if the road isn’t fixed.” Nirmal Singh added, “We want some land be emptied in the village where excess water could be routed. We have already ensured over 4 kanal land. But can’t the administration pitch in to get more land emptied for the routing of water. This work must be done so that people stop losing lives in accidents.” SDM, Phillaur Parleen Kaur Brar is currently on extended leave. Assistant Commssioner (General), Jalandhar, Muki- lan R, who has the charge of Phillaur, said, “The BDPO has not been suspended. Apart from this, the work to route water to a chappar (pond) would have been long complete if we were not facing opposition from a section of villagers. Some villagers, on whose land the pipeline passes, are objecting to the project, due to which the work has been delayed. Apart from this, the poll code for the block samiti elections is also in place. Yet, we are in touch with the panchayat and villagers and are trying to work out an amicable solution so that water could be routed to a 4-kanal land, earmarked on November 19.”
