TRIBUNE PHOTO: RAVI KUMAR Fresh bomb threat triggers panic at passport offices Tribune News Service Chandigarh, March 2 After recent bomb threats at schools in the Tricity, fresh emails, warning of 12 toxic gas bombs, triggered panic at the Sector 17 bus stand, Passport Seva Kendra in Sector 34 and the main passport office in the Industrial Area. According to officials, the threat email was received on the passport office’s email ID at 11:46 pm on March 1. The message was sent from an ID, identified as “Arna Ashwinshekhar”. The matter came to light on Monday morning after staff opened the office, following which the police were alerted at 12:02 pm. Police teams immediately evacuated both passport offices. They also carried out a search operation at the Sector 17 bus stand. A bomb disposal team, dog squad and forensic experts were pressed into service. The search operation continued at these places for nearly one and a half hours. However, no explosive device or suspicious material was found. After the completion of the search, normal functioning resumed at the offices around 1:30 pm. In the subject line, the email sender claimed that 12 poisonous gas bomb blasts would take place at the specified sites. The sender, claiming to be Arna Ashwin Shekhar, levelled allegations of molestation and rape against certain persons. The email further claimed that the threat was issued due to alleged denial of justice in those matters. It also referred to certain organisations and stated that the proposed action was meant to secure justice. The police have launched an investigation to verify whether the names mentioned in the email have any connection with Chandigarh. c m y b Chandigarh, March 2 The Municipal Corporation has floated a Rs 3.98-lakh tender for preparing the drawings of the proposed dog pound at Sector 25-West. The dog pound is to be built at an estimated cost of Rs 18.42 crore by September 30 . The new shelter is being set up in view of the Supreme Court directions on a suo motu writ petition (dated November 7, 2025) for the prevention of dog-bite incidents and the management of stray dogs in institutional premises. The MC has identified around 2 acres for the proposed dog shelter in Sector 25, which will have facilities such animal birth control (ABC), anti-rabies vaccination (ARV), rehabilitation and comprehensive care of stray dogs. The detailed plan of the project has been submitted to the Animal Welfare Board. According to the tender, the successful bidder will prepare structural drawings, specifying dimensions, The new premises will be designed to accommodate 1,980 animals. FILE PHOTO shapes and materials to be used in the construction of the new shelter. It will also provide a detailed analysis of the structural stability, strength and durability of the materials to be used in the construction. The drawings along with detailed calculations are to be submitted within 30 days from the date of issue of work allotment letter to the successful firm. The company will have to get the drawings vetted from a reputed institution. The new premises will be designed to accommodate 1,980 dogs. It will have administrative blocks, water supply and drainage systems, an effluent treatment plant (ETP) and landscaping. Following the SC directions, the UT Administration had undertaken several steps to make all educational institutions, universities, hospi- tals and campuses stray dogfree. These institutions have been asked to raise boundary walls/fencing and ensure proper waste disposal.
