The case has been registered under Sections 406 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code following complaints submitted by Kamaljit Kaur, a resident of Tehing village near Phillaur, and Dalvir Singh, resident of Adampur. According to DSP Bharat Masih, both complainants alleged that the accused Prabhjot Kaur of village Nangal near Phillaur, who was operating through JR & Brothers Travel in Phillaur, had promised to arrange immigration to Italy for their sons. Prabhjot allegedly convinced Kamaljit Kaur that her son Rajat would be sent to Italy and took Rs2.30 lakh from her. Similarly, Dalvir Singh claimed that the accused took Rs 2.80 lakh from him with the assurance of sending his son Gagandeep abroad. However, the complainants alleged that the accused neither arranged the promised travel, nor refunded the funds. Suspecting fraud, both parties approached the authorities and filed complaints on July 8, 2025. Following preliminary verification and inquiry by the police, the allegations were found to warrant legal action after which a case was registered. Police officials confirmed that the accused Prabhjot is absconding and efforts are under way to trace and arrest her. United Opposition stuns AAP, wins Phagwara Block Samiti chief poll Cong boycotts in Nakodar, AAP wins in Adampur, Nawanshahr poll postponed Deepkamal Kaur/ Ashok Kaura Tribune News Service Jalandhar/Nawanshahr/ Phagwara, March 5 In a significant political development in Phagwara, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) suffered a major setback in the election to the Chairman of the Phagwara Block Samiti on Thursday after Opposition parties joined hands to defeat the party’s candidate. The opposition alliance comprising the Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) managed to back Independent candidate Surinderpal Singh (from Panchhat Zone) and get him elected as the Chairman of the Block Samiti. Meanwhile, Nisha Rani from Nangal Khera zone, supported by the Congress, was elected as the Vice-Chairperson. The Block Samiti consists of 20 members, including elected representatives from various parties along with the vote of the local MLA. According to the final tally, AAP secured nine votes, all from its own members. However, the remaining 11 votes went in favour of Surinderpal Singh. This collective opposition strategy ultimately tilted the balance against the ruling party. The sudden twist jolted the plans of AAP that had the largest number of votes in its kitty but failed in its plan to secure the leadership position as it could do during the election of Rampal Uppal as Mayor last year. AAP MP Raj Kumar Chabbewal and party Phagwara MLA Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal with winners of Block Samiti. leader Daljit Singh Raju were reportedly absent from the scene and the party could not manage the cross-voting. Reacting to the outcome, Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal, president of District Congress Committee, Kapurthala, and MLA, Phagwara, described the today’s poll as a sign of changing political winds in Punjab. Congratulating the newly elected Chairman and ViceChairperson, Dhaliwal said, “The result reflects growing dissatisfaction among the public with the policies and functioning of the AAP government.” Nakodar: In Nakodar, the election to the Block Samiti Chairman could not be held as the nine members walked out of the election, alleging unfairness and violation of the democratic norms. Nakodar Congress halqa in-charge Dr Navjot Singh Dahiya and DCC (rural) president Hardev S Laddi Sherowalia staged a dharna with nine members. Dr Dahiya said, “In the 19member house, the Congress had won 10 seats, AAP six, the BSP two and there was a dispute on one seat. AAP had been playing games by getting one Congress member arrested two days ago and getting one of our member joined the party. Our number with the BSP came down to 10 from 12. Today, they did not let a member go and cast vote, threatening her over the allegations of trespass.
