TRIBUNE PHOTO: VICKY Deep pit at roundabout poses risk to commuters; residents fume Tribune News Service Chandigarh, August 1 A deep pit at the Sector 49-50 roundabout has become a major safety hazard for commuters, with residents urging the Municipal Corporation (MC) to undertake immediate repairs. Randhir Singh, a resident of Sector 49, said he had been noticing the pit for several days. He claimed he had repeatedly brought the matter to the attention of the authorities, but no action had been taken. Kamal Sharma, a resident of Sector 48, said the pit was deep enough to cause a major accident at any time. He recalled that a motorcycle had fallen into a pit created after a road caved in at the Sector 47-48 intersection during monsoon last year. “If the pit is not repaired immediately, a similar incident could occur again,” he said. Another resident, RK Garg, alleged that the Municipal Corporation had failed to carry out timely recarpeting of roads, resulting in the formation of several deep potholes across the city. Rajbir Singh, SDO of the Municipal Corporation, said repairing the pit required the complete blockage and diversion of the sewerage and stormwater lines running beneath the roundabout. He said a tender had already been floated and repair work would begin after the sewerage and stormwater flow was diverted. Cong seeks probe into drainage cleaning Meanwhile, the Congress has demanded an independent inquiry into the Municipal Corporation’s expenditure on premonsoon drainage cleaning. Rajiv Sharma, the party’s chief spokesperson, alleged that there was a clear gap between the corporation’s records and the actual condition of the city’s drainage infrastructure, suggesting possible misuse of public funds. He demanded a sectorwise third-party physical audit of all 30,452 road gullies, along with geo-tagged photographs and inspection dates, to be placed in the public domain on the Municipal Corporation’s website. Industrialist Naveen Miglani also expressed concern over the condition of roads in Industrial Area. He said a vehicle had overturned near Plot No. 218 in Phase I due to potholes and the damaged road surface. According to him, the stretch from Dakshin Marg to Phase II has deteriorated significantly. He alleged that while the MC was prompt in collecting property tax, parking charges, garbage collection fees, fire NOC charges and cess, it had failed to maintain basic infrastructure. He further claimed that despite repeated assurances from the Mayor and the Municipal Commissioner, little improvement had been seen on the ground. Chandigarh, August 1 The Municipal Corporation (MC) will float a request for proposal (RFP) to select an agency for processing dry and mixed waste at the existing 200-tonneper-day (TPD) dry waste processing plant in Sector 25. The plant will be upgraded to cater to future waste generation. The proposal was approved by the MC’s General House on Friday. The need for the RFP has arisen as the existing dry waste processing plant, established in 2008, has outlived its operational life. The accused, identified as JP Singh Chadha, allegedly fired from his licensed double-barrel shotgun, seriously injuring his 57-year-old landlady, Manvinder Kaur. She sustained gunshot pellet injuries to her face and was rushed to the PGIMER. She was stated to be in critical condition at the time of filing this report. According to the police, the victim had reportedly reached the Sector 42 flat along with police personnel, a court bailiff and other officials to execute a court order granting possession of the property. Chadha has been occupying the top-floor flat as a tenant for the past 36 years. Chadha and the landlady had been embroiled in a longrunning legal dispute over possession of the property.
