SHO Harmindar Singh said 60 tablets were recovered from the possession of the accused Rishu and Manpreet Singh of Mohalla Kamal Pura and Ashok Kumar of Malrri village. The police arrested Lovpreet Singh of Saidupur village with 17 tablets. The Shahkot police arrested Vinod of Mohalla Dhorra with 22 tablets. The Nurmahal police arrested Charjit Kumar of Kot Badal Khan village and Ravindar Kumar of Ajtanni village with 48 tablets. Cases under the NDPS Act have been registered against the accused. OC 3 NABBED FOR STEALING ~70,000 Phagwara: The Lohian Khas police have arrested three persons on the charge of stealing Rs 70,000 from a house. The accused have been identified as Bablu, Harpreet and Jatpal Singh, all residents of Nihallowal village. Amarjit Kaur of the same village complained to the police that the accused barged into her house on August 3 and stole Rs 70,000. OC COUPLE BOOKED FOR ASSAULT Phagwara: The Bilga police have booked a couple on the charge of assaulting a woman. The accused have been identified as Chaman Lal of Aujla village and his wife Paramjit. Kaushalya of the same village has complained to the police that the accused were discharging sewerage water from their house into the foundations of her house and assaulted and seriously injured her. Investigating officer Jiwan Singh said the accused has been identified as Mangal Singh of Kotla Bhagu village. TRIBUNE PHOTO: MALKIAT SINGH 1,000 kg paneer, 68 kg cream seized in city raid 9 samples collected by food safety team sent for testing Tribune News Service Jalandhar, August 5 The Food Safety Department on Wednesday seized 1,000 kg of paneer and 68 kg of cream from a storage facility on Kala Sanghian Road after the owner failed to provide satisfactory records regarding the manufacture of the paneer stored at the premises. The facility belongs to a prominent dairy operator who supplies paneer in the city. Acting under the supervision of the Assistant Food Commissioner, a food safety team comprising officials Mukul Gill, Robin Kumar and Ravi Nandan conducted raids at dairy establishments in the Jamsher Dairy Complex and Model House areas. During inspections at Chawla Dairy in Model House, officials sought records related to the sale of milk and milk products. The owner informed the team that the products were prepared at a facility on Kala Sanghian Road. However, during a subsequent inspection of the Kala Sanghian Road unit, officials found that only ghee and curd were being manufactured there and no paneer production was taking place. As the owner could not satisfactorily explain where the paneer had been produced, the department collected samples of paneer, cream, ghee and curd from the facility. Suspecting possible adulteration, officials seized the entire stock of 1,000 kg paneer and 68 kg cream stored at the premises and sent samples for laboratory analysis. The team also collected milk and ghee samples from Radhe Dairy, Lovely Dairy and Satpal Dairy at the Jamsher Dairy Complex. In all, nine milk and milk product samples were collected during the raids and sent to the State Food Laboratory for testing. Department officials said they had also written to the State Food Analyst seeking an early report on samples taken from the seized stock. Jalandhar, August 5 The election to the post of Municipal Council President in Nawanshahr was conducted today by way of draw of lots as the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party had nine candidates each. Suman Lal, who had won the MC poll from Ward no. 16 as an Independent candidate, joined AAP at the eleventh hour and her name was proposed for the post of President. Congress councillor Raman Kumar became the Senior Vice-President and Davinder Kumar from AAP was announced as the Vice-President. In the presence of an observer appointed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court and amid heavy security deployment, the election was conducted under videography at the office of the Block Development and Panchayat Officer. As the result was decided through a draw of lots, no councillor, including those from the Congress, raised any objection to the process. There are 19 wards in the Nawanshahr Municipal Council, with BSP MLA Nachhatar Pal exercising the 20th vote. Neither of the two rival camps, one led by former Congress MLA Angad Saini and the other by AAP’s halqa in-charge Robby Kang, was able to establish a clear majority. Eight councillors had won on Congress ticket, six on Suman Lal (in pink suit), who has been elected President of the MC, Nawanshahr. AAP two on SAD, one on BSP , and two Independents. While one Independent councillor went with the Congress, taking its tally to nine, the BSP councillor and BSP MLA supported AAP . Suman Lal joined AAP in the last stages. The two SAD councillors remained present but abstained from voting. Since both groups had nine seats each, the authorities decided to elect the Municipal Council president through a draw of lots, in which AAP emerged victorious. The new President Suman Lal said, “I shall work for ensuring provision of all civic amenities for the residents.” Protest over cane Ministerial staff’s 2-day dues on August 20 pen-down strike begins Aakanksha N Bhardwaj Tribune News Service Jalandhar, August 5 The Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU)-Doaba held a press conference in Jalandhar today to highlight the issue of long pending sugarcane payments owed to farmers and announce a series of protest, if the dues are not cleared. Addressing the media, union leaders alleged that farmers are yet to receive Rs 27.84 crore pertaining to the 2021–22 sugarcane crushing season, along with Rs 68.50 per quintal for the 2025–26 season from the Phagwara Sugar Mill. The union announced that it will first seek an appointment with the Punjab Agri- culture Minister to discuss the issue. BKU-Doaba president Manjit Rai said, “On August 10, a memorandum regarding the pending sugarcane dues will be submitted to the DC, Kapurthala.” Union leaders warned that if the government fails to resolve the issue, a massive gathering will be held at the Phagwara Grain Market on August 20, followed by a large-scale protest on roads. They stated that the government would be responsible for any escalation arising from its failure to address the farmers’ grievances. Vice-president Davinder Singh said the dues should be released at the earliest. Our Correspondent Hoshiarpur, August 5 The two-day statewide pendown strike called by the Punjab State Ministerial Services Union began on Wednesday, with ministerial employees abstaining from work across government offices in Hoshiarpur and other parts of the state. The strike brought routine administrative work to a near standstill as employees stayed away from official duties. Government offices wore a deserted look, while people, who had arrived to get various official works done, had to return empty-handed due to the disruption. The agitation has been launched in support of several long-pending demands, including implementation of the Old Pension Scheme, regularisation of services, restoration of pay scales as per the January 15, 2015, and July 17, 2020, notifications, filling of vacant posts, withdrawal of the Departmental Efficiency Test (DET) condition, release of pending arrears and implementation of a 2.59 fitment factor in revised pay scales. State vice-chairman and district president Anirudh Modgil said the government had failed to honour assurances given to employees, leaving the union with no option but to intensify its agitation. “The pen-down strike has received an overwhelming response from ministerial employees across the state. If the government continues to ignore our demands, the union will further escalate the protest in the coming days,” he said. The union said the pen-down strike will continue tomorrow, while employees will stage demonstrations outside government offices across Punjab on August 7, if their demands remain unresolved.
