In the first case registered on August 5 under Sections 21-C, 23 and 61/85 of the NDPS Act, the Border Security Force recovered 561 gram of heroin near the Border Out Post (BOP), Kahangarh. According to the FIR, a BSF patrolling team found a small packet containing heroin in the Kahangarh area. A drug detection kit was used to confirm the substance as heroin. The consignment, along with the packing material, was subsequently handed over to the police. A case was registered against an unidentified person and further investigation is on to establish the source and intended recipient of the consignment. In the second case, the Gharinda police arrested Sonu Singh, alias Monu, and Ranjit Sing,h alias Nannu, both residents of Attari. Gurdaspur SSP Aditya-led special teams raided areas where the sale of narcotics, particularly heroin, was reported under Operation Parhar-4.0, and arrested those involved or having links to smuggling modules. The operation was an intelligence-led campaign launched to dismantle organised crime, gangster networks and drug trafficking in this border district. Those arrested have been identified as Gagan, alias Dishka (23), and Jaspinder Singh (25), both residents of Nikosaran village in Gurdaspur; Sukhpreet Singh, alias Sukh (30), of Jaintipur; Abhishek Sabharwal, alias Abhi (25), of Sharma Colony here, and Manpreet Singh, alias Mannu (26), of Channanke village in Amritsar. According to DGP Gaurav Yadav, preliminary investigation has revealed that the key accused was in direct contact with a foreign-based smuggler, who allegedly facilitated the movement of heroin and illegal weapons across the International Border for further distribution. Sharing details, the police said they first arrested Gagan and Jaspinder on the basis of intelligence and recovered the pistol and cartridges from them. During a campaign in July, 34,410 passengers were found travelling without a ticket in the Ferozepur division. Divisional railway manager Sanjeev Kumar said the checking drive continued in the division to ensure a safe and lawful journey. In July this year, the division’s ticket checking staff found a total of 34,410 passengers travelling without a ticket. Then there were those who were found travelling on an invalid ticket. The total fine collected was pegged at Rs 2.71 crore, including over Rs 43 lakh from the Amritsar railway station. As for cleanliness, regular checks are conducted at the division’s main stations. Those found littering are penalised. In July, 137 passengers were fined over Rs 53,000 for littering the station under the Anti-Littering Act. Giving passengers’ safety a priority, the Ferozepur division keeps launching awareness campaigns on risks posed by illegal level-crossing.
