INBRIEF 2 WOMEN FOIL SNATCHING BID Phagwara: Two women showed courage when they resisted an alleged gold-chain snatching attempt by two unidentified motorcycle-borne persons in the Hargobind Nagar locality here on Thursday afternoon. Neelam Manchanda and her sister-in-law Preeti Manchanda were returning home when two persons on a motorcycle allegedly intercepted them and attempted to snatch Neelam's gold chain. Neelam reportedly managed to hold on to the chain as the suspects pulled it, causing the chain to break and fall on the road. The two suspects, however, managed to flee from the spot on their motorcycle. Phagwara SP Major Singh said the police were examining CCTV camera footage from the area to identify the suspects and ascertain the sequence of events. OC TEACHER HELD FOR ASSAULT Phagwara: The police have arrested a government schoolteacher for allegedly assaulting an employee of the SDM office and threatening him. The accused had been identified as Varinder Singh Sanghera, an ETT teacher posted at Government Primary School, Bir Pind village, and a resident of Palam Vihar Colony, Nakodar. The case was registered following a complaint by Gagandeep Prasher of Bundala village in Nurmahal. The complainant, who is employed at the SDM office, alleged that the accused assaulted him at the underconstruction building of the Nakodar SDM office and threatened him. OC Two SFJ operatives held for pro-Khalistan graffiti Accused admit role in Ambedkar statue vandalism too: CP Tribune News Service JALANDHAR, October 8 The Commissionerate Police Jalandhar has arrested two operatives of the banned outfit Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) for writing pro-Khalistan graffiti on the wall of Red Cross Bhawan here. The incident had occurred on September 29, a day before Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to Jalandhar for the antidrug rally. Commissioner of Police Satinder Singh said on Thursday that the two arrested accused Sukhpreet Singh and Rajdeep Singh are both residents of Nihaluwal village in Jalandhar Rural. Both the arrested accused have a criminal history with cases pertaining to the Arms Act, NDPS Act, etc, have been registered against them. Police teams have also recovered a motorcycle used by them during the commission of the crime. Pro-Khalistani slogans were found written on the outer wall of Red Cross Bhawan here on September 29. Later, mastermind of the banned outfit Gurpatwant Singh Pannun also posted the video to various media platforms. An FIR was registered under Section 298 of the BNS at Police Station, Chabbewal. An FIR under Sections 147, 152, 196, 61(2) of the BNS and 66F of the IT Act has already been registered at Police Division No 6 in Jalandhar. Both accused will be produced before a local court to seek police remand to uncover links and identify other associates involved in the conspiracy. PCC chief at Dera Ballan 4 BOOKED FOR ABETTING SUICIDE Hoshiarpur: The Chabbewal police have booked four persons, including the wife of a man who allegedly died by suicide, on the charge of abetment to suicide. According to a complaint lodged by Balvir Singh of Saidpur village, his brother Pritam Singh had married Manjit Kaur of Panjoda. The couple had a son, Amritpal Singh, while Pritam had two children from his first marriage. The complainant alleged that Manjit Kaur got property transferred by her father-in-law Harbhajan in the name of her son. This reportedly led to disputes in the family. He alleged that due to the tension, Pritam Singh allegedly hanged himself. The police have booked four persons. oc Ashok Kaura PHAGWARA,OCTOBER 8 As investigations into the violence at Lovely Professional University (LPU) continue, the police have so far named 89 youths, including more than 80 students of the university, in connection with the cases registered over the episode. Sources in the Phagwara police said 17 youths, including 15 LPU students, had so far been arrested in connection with the violence. Meanwhile, four LPU students were produced before the court of JMIC Priyanka Sondhi. Yogya Agarwal, a resident of Jaipur, Rajasthan, and Kushal, a resident of Siriasar Kalan in Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan, were produced before the court. The police obtained one-day remand of both accused. In another development, Ishush Mahajan of Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh, and Anuj of Kurukshetra, Haryana, were also produced before the same court. The court sent both to 14 days’ judicial custody at Kapurthala Central Jail. All four accused produced before the court are students of the LPU. The police have arrested students from different parts of the country. The list provided by the police includes Krishna Kumar, Bhavishya Karan, James Dahiya, Antriksh Dutta, Sahil Singh, Ishush Mahajan, Anuj, Kushal and Yogya. The students named in the police list are from Bihar, Maharashtra, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh. The police list also includes a juvenile from Mandi, besides Jayant of Kota, and Aryan of Rohtak. The police have also reported the arrest of two outsiders Jasmeet Kumar of Soami Param Nagar, Phagwara, and Gagandeep of Phagwara. Police officials said the investigation was continuing and that further arrests could follow on the basis of evidence and the role attributed to those identified during the probe. Patwari, agent caught taking ~5,000 bribe Jalandhar, October 8 The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB), during its ongoing drive against corruption in the state, has caught Patwari Vishavjeet Singh posted at Basti Peer Daad and private agent Rakesh Kumar, alias Sonu, red-handed accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000. An official spokesperson of the state VB said the accused had been arrested on a complaint lodged by a resident of New Rajan Nagar, Jalandhar. He stated that the complainant stated that he had purchased a 4-marla plot and got the sale deed registered in the name of his younger brother Umesh Kumar on December 23, 2024. He approached the patwari for the mutation of the plot, but the matter was repeatedly delayed. Yesterday, he again approached Patwari Vishwadeep Singh for the mutation of the plot. He directed him to meet his Rakesh Kumar, who demanded Rs 5,000 as bribe. Under compulsion, the complainant initially gave Rs 1,500, but accused Rakesh returned the amount and asked him to give Rs 5,000 the next day. The conversation regarding the demand of illegal gratification was recorded by the complainant. Unwilling to pay the illegal gratification, the complainant approached the VB Range, Jalandhar. The accused had been identified as Sajan of Mohalla Toteanni, Chuheki village. According to a complaint lodged by Sandeep Kumar, a resident of the same locality, the accused entered his room on October 7, tore pages of the holy book and took away other articles. SARABJIT SINGH Phagwara, October 8 In a major relief to thousands of JCT employees and their families, who have been awaiting settlement of their retirement savings for several years, MP Dr Raj Kumar Chabbewal on Thursday said the long-pending Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) dues of JCT Mill employees would be released within a fortnight. Addressing a meeting with JCT employees in Phagwara, Dr Chabbewal said the government was committed to resolving the long-pending issues of JCT workers and assured them that he was monitoring the matter to ensure settlement of their dues at the earliest. He said the district administration had already constituted a committee comprising officials from the EPFO, the Resolution Professional and other stakeholders. The committee had been working continuously to complete the exercise. It had reconciled the service records and provident fund accounts of the workers besides verifying employment records, matching PF contributions and resolving discrepancies accumulated over several years, he added. Additional Deputy Com- missioner Randeep Singh Heer said the JCT Trust had deposited around Rs 124 crore with the EPFO towards the provident fund dues of employees. Of this amount, around Rs 81 crore pertains to the Phagwara unit and is expected to benefit approximately 24,000 employees. He said the employeewise exercise, including verification of the amount payable to each individual employee, had been completed. The EPFO would shortly upload the details on its portal, following which the eligible dues would start getting credited to the PF accounts. Man duped of ~4.8L on pretext of policy bonus BJP holds protest against govt over graft allegations Our Correspondent Jalandhar, October 8 The BJP Jalandhar Urban, , under district president Ashok Sareen Hicky, organised a protest against the AAP government at Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh Chowk. Hundreds of BJP workers, office-bearers and senior leaders participated in the demonstration and burnt an effigy of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann while raising slogans against the government. Addressing a gathering, Hicky launched an attack on the government, stating the action taken by central agencies in cases related to alleged corruption linked to the Chief Hoshiarpur, October 8 The cyber police have registered a case against unidentified persons for allegedly duping a city resident of ~4.80 lakh on the pretext of paying a bonus on his insurance policy. According to the complaint lodged by Rakesh Kumar Bhatia of Guru Gobind Singh Nagar, he received calls from different numbers on September 18. The callers allegedly told him that a bonus of ~22.34 lakh was due on his policy and asked him to deposit money first to receive the amount. Believing the callers, Bhatia transferred ~4,80,299 from his accounts. The callers assured him that the bonus would be credited within 48 hours. However, the promised amount was not received even after several days. He subsequently realised that he had been cheated and approached the police. The cyber police have registered a case against unidentified persons and started an investigation. The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising four eminent persons as trustees.
The Tribune, the largest selling daily in North India, publishes news and views without any bias or prejudice of any kind. Restraint and moderation, rather than agitational language and partisanship, are the hallmarks of the paper. It is an independent newspaper in the real sense of the term.
The English edition apart, the 133-year-old Tribune has two sister publications, Punjabi Tribune (in Punjabi) and Dainik Tribune (in Hindi).
