The spectrum of Curative Dentistry is too narrow to produce a healthy society. In contrast, Preventive Dentistry focuses on pre-pathogenesis phase of disease thereby diminishing the chances of people falling ill at all. However, as the concept of Preventive Dentistry is relatively new and largely neglected in India, there is a need to revisit, redesign and rebrand Preventive Dentistry for the sake of those millions of Indians who nowadays should not be allowed to suffer just because they could not afford or access curative care. In the absence of a defined syllabus, the knowledge of Preventive Dentistry is scattered all over the dental curriculum thereby losing its focus, impact and usefulness. To overcome this deficit, a comprehensive textbook has been designed where all aspects of prevention related to each specialty of Dentistry are taken into consideration. Biostatistics has been discussed in depth as it is a prerequisite to understanding of disease causation, dynamics of transmission, identification of risk factors/risk groups, availability of diagnostic-prophylactictreatment measures, organized application of these measures to appropriate persons or groups, and continuous evaluation of procedure(s) applied. To facilitate data analysis by beginners, a step-by-step guide on using epidemiologic software has been described. Innovative and emerging topics have been included for the first time on AYUSH (Indian System of Medicine and Homeopathy), Tele-dentistry, and government laws applicable to Preventive Dentistry. A major highlight of this book is the systematic review of India-centric database on preventive trials. It is, perhaps, a maiden effort to compile recent data which can be of immense utility for dental researchers, undergraduate and postgraduate students. The book has been laid out in a practical order, signalling a departure from the traditional approach. This way a student should be able to connect oral epidemiology with biostatistics and how these, in-turn, influence selection of the most appropriate preventive strategies to manage underlying dental diseases/ conditions. Colorful pictures and lucid diagrams have been included in most chapters to simplify information as well as help readers practice Preventive Dentistry as a vibrant, clinical skills-based specialty rather than parrot it as a sluggish subject of theoretical domain. In summary, a dedicated reference book that aims to fill-in the existing void in didactic and skills required for Preventive Dentistry and Biostatistics!
