Chanakya is widely regarded as one of the foremost Indian economists and political thinkers. Being the chief advisor to Chandragupta Maurya, he is credited for the unrivalled expansion of his empire in medieval India. His policies and advice helped in making the Mauryan Empire one of the greatest in Indian history. This book brings together the founding principles of his philosophical thought on effective governance of an empire. His teachings are still as relevant today as they were centuries ago. Chanakya, also known as the Indian Machiavelli, was a shrewd politician and brilliant strategist. The book is divided into five sections. In the first section, it provides an introduction to the life and works of the royal advisor, highlighting the diversity of his body of work. It has chapters like The Varied Writings of Chanakya, A Peerless Personality, and Leaves from the Life of Chanakya. Section two presents the famed Chanakya Niti, a series of 17 directives for efficient management of the state. It goes on to discuss his equally significant texts Niti Shastra and Artha Shastra in sections three and four, covering Chanakya’s views on political strategy and economics. The concluding remarks are given in section five.
